Washcloth #9 ~ Yellow Checks

Hi there! This week’s free washcloth pattern is called “Yellow Checks”. This quick pattern only uses the single crochet, double crochet, and the chain stitch, so even if you’re a beginner, you can make this washcloth! If you’d like to use this stitch for something other than a washcloth you can! Just chain a multiple of 6 then add 2 more chains.

This pattern is also available as an ad-free PDF in my Ravelry store.

DESCRIPTION: Yellow Checks is a quick, cute pattern that makes a lovely open fabric. With the tilted blocks of double crochet there is a touch of whimsy in this functional but not boring washcloth.

GAUGE & SIZING: Gauge (tension) isn’t very important in this project. Play around with hook sizes until you find one that makes a fabric you like. For reference, mine had 3 blocks of DC and 8 rows per 4″ This pattern is written to produce a washcloth roughly 10.5″ by 10″.

Note: After row two, the first and fourth DC of the quad will go in DCs from the row below. Only the middle two DCs will be in the chain space.

ch = chain

st = stitch

sp = space

SC = single crochet

DC = double crochet

* * = Repeat what is in asterisks the indicated number of times

About 120 yards of cotton or cotton blend yarn (Sample is made in Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton in the color Curry)

(Such as Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran or Dishie from WeCrochet)

A 4.0 mm (G/6) hook

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Stitch markers if desired.

Ch 44

1. SC in the second chain and across. Turn..

2. Ch 5 (counts as a DC and ch 2 here and throughout).. Sk next 2 sts. 1 DC in each of the next 4 sts.

*Ch 2, sk 2, 1 DC in each of the next four sts.* Repeat across. Turn.

3. Ch 5, sk next 2 DC. DC in next DC. *2 DC in the ch 2 space and 1 DC in the next DC. Ch 2, sk 2 DC, 1 DC in the next DC.*

Repeat across, ending with 2 DC in the ch 5 space and 1 DC in the 3rd ch of the turning chain. Turn.

Repeat 3 until the stated measurement or your desired size is reached.

Weave in your ends:

Thread the needle with one yarn tail. Weave the needle back through several stitches, about an inch. Turn and go back through, beginning in the second stitch from needle. Repeat once more. Repeat with any other yarn tails. Snip the tails.

I hope you enjoy making this pattern! If you plan to use this stitch for something, let us know in the comments!
